Web Site Statistics

Web site statistics give you a picture of the visitors to your web site and their activities. For example, statistics will tell you how many visitors came to your web site during the previous month, what day and time they visited, what pages they viewed, what search engines they used and much, much more. Statistics are a great way to track visits from banner ads and links on other sites.

We create graphic statistics for your account at the beginning of each month. You can view the statistics online and/or download and archive the files via FTP.

Statistics Definitions

The following are definitions of the statistics that appear in your statistics report. They appear below in the order found on your report.

REQUESTS

Total Requests - Often referred to as the number of "hits", this represents the number of files which were requested from your web site, not how many people visited your site. This statistics includes requests for all types of files such as HTML files (e.g. .html, .mgi, .htm), image files (.gif, .jpg), and download files (e.g. PDFs).

Total Cached Requests - Not applicable. The statistics software does not read requests that are pulled from the browser cache.

Total Failed Requests - Not applicable. The statistics software does not read requests for files that do not exist, etc.

Invalid Log Entries - When web servers log information, they occasionally write bad data or incomplete data. This value indicates the number of lines that the statistics software could not interpret and therefore were not used in the analysis.

Average Daily Requests - The total number of requests divided by the number of days in the report period.

Average Requests/Hour - The total number of requests divided by the number of hours in the report period.

VISITS INFO

Total Visits - This is the most useful measure of how popular your site really is. Visits are are calculated differently than requests. When a visitor first views your site, the statistics software assigns that visitor a unique ID and keeps track of that visitor for the entire time they are viewing your site. A standard timeout period (10 minutes) determines when the visitor has completed their visit to your site. This statistic calculates all visits (or sessions) including multiple visits from the same person.

Total Pages - The total number of pages requested from your site. This statistic includes pages only (e.g., .html, .htm, etc.) and does not include other types of files (e.g., images, PDFs, etc.).

Total Downloaded Files - The total number of download files (e.g., PDFs, ZIPs, SITs) downloaded from your site.

Total Download (MB) - The total size in megabytes of files downloaded from your web site. Large download files can contribute significantly to your total data transfer (Total Megabytes).

Total Unique Visitors - Unlike Total Visits, this statistic does not count visits from the same person more than once.

Total Repeat Visitors - The number of visitors that visited your web site more than once.

Average Visit Length - The average amount of time that visitors spend on your web site in minutes and seconds.

Average Requests/Visit - The average number of files requested from your web site for each visitor. This statistic includes all types of files such as HTML files (e.g. .html, .mgi, .htm), image files (.gif, .jpg), and download files (e.g. PDFs).

Average Pages/Visit - The average number of pages (e.g., .html, .htm, etc.) accessed during each visit.

Average Daily Visits - The average number of visits per day.

Average Daily Megabytes - The total megabytes divided by the number of days in the report.

Average Bits/Sec (bps) - Estimates the transfer speed of the server over the report period, measured in bits per second.
